Oil Spill

Contact details and procedures for reporting an oil spill in marine and coastal environments. The risk of oil spills is greatest in harbours (Durban and Richards Bay) and there are contingency plans in place for such events.

An oil spill occurs when large amounts of oil seeps or pours into the sea. This can be the result of boats and shipping activities, drilling, from land based sources and as a result of accidents, often causing huge environmental impacts to the marine environment, including damage to marine birds.

Oil spill contingency plans are available for Durban Bay and Richards Bay Harbours (see links under Additional Information).

These plans should be referred to for complete disaster team contact details.

DFFE, SAMSA, EDTEA, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the respective Local Municipalities (see District Municipalities/ Metropolitan: King CetshwayoiLembeeThekwiniUgu) combine efforts to provide a response in the event of any oil pollution at sea.

An oil spill or threat of an oil spill in the marine environment should be reported to:

  1. The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA)
  2. Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE)
  3. EDTEA and the respective Local Municipalities
  4. African Marine Solutions (Pty) LTD (AMSOL), who manage the standby tug responsible for containment and clean-up
  5. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife

Note that

  1. The Principal Officer closest to the incident should be the first contact
  2. The contact list includes people outside the KZN area
