Know your Estuaries

KwaZulu-Natal’s estuaries have ecological, recreational, resource-use, cultural, spiritual and aesthetic significance and value for their users and beneficiaries.

Few of the 76 estuaries have been well-studied as holistic ecosystems and several have not been studied at all. Following is an introduction to each estuary, its classification type, location on the coast, the interim given name (pending official gazetting) and the name origin and aliases. For ease of comparison, details of system morphology, catchment characteristics and a recent health status assessment is provided.
