The KZN State of the Coast Report is a statutory requirement. Chapter 1 provides background information and includes definitions of the features in the coastal zone in terms of the Integrated Coastal Management Act (ICMA). This chapter also provides a guideline for reading and cross-referencing within the report (Table 1.2).

Chapter 1 of the KZN State of the Coast Report (SoCR) outlines the need for such reporting, the applicable reporting framework and the limitations of the SoCR. The chapter defines the coastal zone and concludes with a guideline for reading and cross-referencing within the report.
