As per the promise made by the eThekwini Municipality recently, an announcement was made on November 28 that more beaches have re-opened after they were closed at the end of September due to excessive E. coli contamination.
The contamination was a result of a continuous flow of raw sewage into the rivers and lagoons. The sewage emanates from non-functioning pump stations, either because of the damage done by floods in April or vandalism.
On November 23, eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda promised that all beaches will be opened by December 1, in time for the holiday season. In a statement, eThekwini said in addition to Amanzimtoti Main Beach, Warner Beach and Umgababa Beach, which opened last month, Winklespruit Beach has re-opened, as well.
eThekwini spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said the decision to open Winklespruit Beach was taken after experts conducted water tests which confirmed that the water quality had improved to an acceptable standard.
“The City is constantly monitoring water quality at all beaches to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. The public will be informed in due course about the re-opening of additional beaches and of other pools which are currently undergoing maintenance. ” said Mayisela.
Umgababa Beach swimming pool has also been opened.
