Anglers with updated and new fishing permits working the waters along the north coast region have brought in good hauls of fish on both the deepsea and rock-and-surf sides of the fraternity. Cape Vidal and Sodwana Bay have both been busy, owing to the amount and size of billfish in the area. The secret to success has been simply trolling skirted lures. The colour of the lures is a personal choice, with the black/purple and bonito colour proving the two most popular choices.
The guys on fishing skis working the waters closer to shore have done well with the couta. There have been some bigger fish, but most have been in the 8-12 kg range.
Rock-and-surf anglers have experienced a rollercoaster ride in terms of some days being extremely quiet, with others proving productive. The productive days have produced a number of raggies, with a splash of diamond rays in between. The raggies have mainly come out at the Tugela River mouth, with bigger head baits gaining the best results.
The rest of the north coast has been hit-or-miss, with some spots producing amazing action and others that are seemingly perfect, not seeing fish.
