Watching the whale highway on the KZN coast

Humpback whales travelling south with their calves have been putting on a spectacular show along the coast of late. These colossal mammals are often sighted off the North Coast between June and November, with occasional sightings of the southern right whale.

In June/July the humpbacks come up from the cold Antarctic water where they feed, passing Ballito as they migrate to their feeding and breeding grounds off Mozambique.

They then return in October/November with their new young.

Humpback whales can grow up to 16 m long and weigh as much as 11 elephants, with lungs the size of two small cars.
