Warner Beach’s beauty captured forever

A Warner Beach graphic designer has used lockdown to fuel one of his passions. With his business, which mostly deals with the hospitality and liquor industries, coming to a standstill, Anton Kieck, 57, decided to expand his hobby of photography and began taking images of nature, the sea, birds and beach activities much more seriously. He started photography as a hobby 10 to 12 years ago.

“I was going crazy during lockdown. As I love the outdoors, I wanted to show people how beautiful our coastline is and why it needs to be protected.”

However, disaster struck on one of his outings. “While photographing the oyster catchers at Chain Rocks, I slipped and fell into a pool, cutting myself and destroying my camera. It seemed that all was lost, but I shared my story on a local social media page and Cary Boyce lent me a replacement camera. To thank her I began really focusing on my photographic skills and posting images on my social media page and shared on a few other groups.”

He was pleasantly surprised by the positive response and Anton decided to take it to the next level. He had a collection of 10 postcards printed, named Iconic Warners, which feature images of the beach, birds, surfing, the sea and other unique local features. These will go on sale soon at a few selected outlets and the series is limited to 500 sets only, which will be bound with a hand numbered wraparound sleeve and housed in a handmade wooden box.

“The whole project is as eco-friendly as possible and we have an anti-litter message on the wrapper. I hope to be able to take a portion of the proceeds of the sale of the cards and hire local unemployed people to collect litter in our area, in an effort to pay it forward as much as possible.” Sapphire Coast Tourism has come on board to endorse the project and its logo appears on the wrapper. “The next step, if all goes well and the cards sell, is to print a second series for Toti, followed by Winklespruit. I thought I would start with my home town, but I am already working on collecting images for those collections.”
