uMhlanga sewage spills need urgent attention

(Northglen News) Picture: One of the spills is flowing across the uMhlanga Promenade.

WHILE the sewage spill affecting the uMhlanga Lagoon has been fixed, three more spills have been identified by the uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP).  Residents have urged the City to take urgent action over the leaks which they say is a health hazard. In a statement on their Facebook page, the UIP said they were aware of the spills.

“Three spills on Marine Drive, Chartwell Drive and the uMhlanga Promenade have been identified. All incidents have been reported and we are awaiting urgent attention from the municipality, who have said that they will be on the scene as soon as possible to fix the issues,” the statement said.

Two weeks ago, uMhlanga Beach was closed due to a burst main at a pump station in Blackburn Village, which led to raw sewage flowing into the uMhlanga Lagoon and Ohlange River last week.

At the time the community were advised to avoid the polluted water due to safety risks
