THE 14th of July marks International Shark Awareness Day and this year the South African Association for Marine Biological Research will be showcasing some of their resident cartilaginous fish, starting with Notch, a ragged tooth shark housed at the Ushaka Sea World aquarium.

According to the association there are about 400 different species of sharks in the ocean.

Notch has been at Ushaka Sea World since it was opened in 2004.

“Notch is probably our most well-recognised ragged tooth shark in the aquarium. She got her name from the ‘notch’ in her second dorsal fin making her distinguishable from the other ragged tooth sharks in the Large Shark Exhibit,” said SAAMBR

“She has given birth to two pups, Tony who was born on 3 December 2014 and Storm who was born on 9 March 2013.”

Ragged tooth sharks are currently classified as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List.
