9.1 Coastal Management

Human activities have placed the coastal environment under increasing pressure affecting the goods and services that are provided by the coastal zone, and making effective coastal management and the sustainable use of coastal resources essential in ensuring a resilient coast for future generations. South Africa is signatory to many international conservation conventions and has also enacted environmental laws, including the Integrated Coastal Management Act (ICMA) to manage the impacts of human activities. This section discusses the historic and current state of coastal management in KZN, and provides management responses / actions for KZN highlighting that effective coastal management requires that all relevant authorities and organisations work together.
