Tender is out for Richards Bay lighthouse demolishing

“Race against time for lighthouse demolishing tender“

 Transnet has called for tenders for the demolishing of the Richards Bay lighthouse.

This as the structure, which when built in 1979 stood 300 metres from the ocean, is now a mere three metres away from tumbling down the edge of the coastal dune face.

The hastily-called ‘short lead’ tender, under the category: ‘Demolition and Blasting’, required applicants to attend a briefing session at the lighthouse site in Meerensee last week.

Siva Moodley, Regional Manager East: Lighthouse and Navigational Systems (LNS) at TNPA, confirmed his business unit’s tender.

‘The tender is a request for proposals from the demolition industry on how best to remove the existing structure.

‘This is truly a unique situation,’ said Moodley.

‘LNS is mindful of the precarious position of the current structure, and specialist assistance is required.

‘We are working with the City of uMhlathuze to put the necessary services in place for a new lighthouse on a new site in Richards Bay.

‘Construction of the structure is on track for this year.

‘The process has begun to erect a temporary light and structure on the current site at a safe distance from the cliff edge.’
