‘Supertide’ warning for Dolphin Coast this weekend

People are urged to be careful on the beaches this weekend due to unusually high tides.

““Be particularly cautious after hours, ” warns Xulu, “Even if you’re just standing on the bank above the beach taking photos.”“

Residents of The Dolphin Coast are warned to be cautious if they plan on spending time at the beach this weekend due to the possibility of ‘supertides’.

Weather and tidal reports suggest unusually high tides are a possibility for the next few days.

According to Kwadukuza Lifeguard Supervisor Bongani Xulu they don’t expect high tides as dangerous as last week – but that’s not to say people should let their guard down.

“The tides often run in a sequence, after last week’s highs we would expect to see another cycle of very high tides – not as high as they were but still more than enough to be dangerous under certain circumstances,” Xulu explained.

“Be particularly cautious after hours,” warns Xulu, “Even if you’re just standing on the bank above the beach taking photos.”

He asked that residents and visitors stick to beaches under the supervision of a lifeguard – and that they listen to the lifeguard’s instructions.

“Beaches flying a red flag are closed and have no lifeguard on duty, we ask that people refrain from swimming there.”

Quentin Power of Specialised Rescue Unit, who shared the warning on Facebook this morning, told The Courier that “we are also currently experiencing a supermoon“ – the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the moon makes to the Earth on its orbit – and that this was part of the reason for the unusually high tides.
