Social gatherings at beaches and parking lots are prohibited during lockdown, remind police

Level 3 of the nationwide lockdown has allowed recreational and commercial fishermen to operate under strict conditions. However, others have taken advantage of this and are  gathering at beaches for other activities, including, picnicking, braaing, swimming and even gathering in large groups in parking lots, with most not using personal protective equipment or practicing social distancing.

A number of people gather at Rocky Bay, with few wearing face masks.

Visits to beaches in Scottburgh, Park Rynie, Preston and Rocky Bay revealed just how widespread the problem is. There have also been reports of ‘social’ gatherings in parking lots at the mall and outside business premises.

“These gatherings for parties and getaways is strictly prohibited,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Adam Francis.

“In order to prevent  further spread of Covid-19, people are encouraged to restrict their movements and ensure the use of personal protective equipment when and if they have to leave their homes for work or for essentials.”
