It is believed that the Mahatma Gandhi Pump station had major pump failure. This led to both the mechanical and electrical failures of three of the four pumps.
Myles White, Rear Commodore of Dinghies, said the entire marina area was a “disgusting cesspool” over the weekend.
“The port is addressing this with the eThekwini Municipality. There were teams pouring peroxide and chemicals into the Lavender Creek on Saturday. It is recommended to stay off the water until the water quality has improved significantly,” White said.
Tozi Mthethwa, city spokesperson said, council mechanical and electrical teams have been working around the clock to resolve the electrical issue experienced at the Mahatma Gandhi Wastewater Pump Station.
“The internal electrical failures have affected actuators that control the movement of gates at the pump station. This in turn results in these gates not operating correctly,” she said.
Mthethwa added that as a reaction and mitigation measure to this, the city will disinfect any overflows and mechanically aerate the water in order to improve oxygen levels.
“We are also monitoring water quality during and after these measures. The overflow will not affect any bathing beaches or drinking water,” Mthethwa said.
