Sewage crisis averted

With St Lucia in the middle of peak season and full to capacity with holiday makers, a sewage-related crisis was averted on Tuesday as the uMngeni Water task team moved in swiftly to carry out emergency repairs.

Two sewage pumps in St Lucia packed up earlier in the day and the uMgeni Water team, fulfilling its provincially mandated three month contract in uMkhanyakude District, was immediately notified.

The team was already carrying out emergency repairs to a sewage pump in Nordale, near Mtubatuba Town, and moved on to St Lucia once the Nordale pump had been repaired.

It came to light that two new pumps would be necessary, and those were immediately brought in from Hluhluwe.

By 8pm on Tuesday, both St Lucia and Nordale’s sewage pumps were working as they should.

A burst water pipe near the Umfolozi Golf Course in Riverview on Tuesday was the reason every town from Mtubatuba to St Lucia and in between went without water since the Mfolozi River started flowing mid-December.

This was fixed by lunch time on Wednesday.

As the river is drying up again after no recent rains, pumping of water must be regulated.

However, five boreholes along the river are yielding sufficient water for the greater area’s residents.

Moreover, a borehole in St Lucia has been drilled and should soon be ready for use, as well as two boreholes in Khula Village, which will soon be connected to an electricity supply.

A second borehole will be drilled in St Lucia in the new year.

Remarkably, the Khula Village boreholes were drilled to a depth of 27m but good quality water was found at just 4m.
