More than 50 members of the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) united at the entrance of Durban City Hall, earlier today, to commemorate Earth Day. Apart from voicing their calls for environmental justice and clean air, the NPO also remembered the fallen activists who were killed in their fight for a greener and safer earth.

Speaking about the event, Shanice Firmin, from SDCEA, said they have been fighting for environmental justice and clean air for 25 years.

“We are here today to highlight the message surrounding climate change. There is no such thing as clean gas or natural gas. It’s not clean and not renewable. The developments that are set for our areas are bad for our climate. We are also questioning if the eThekwini Municipality has a climate action plan? We want know what the government has done to pursue that,” said Firmin.
