Sardine frenzy hits Doonside Beach

Fishermen, netters and spectators eagerly made their way down to Doonside Beach early this morning, June 13, for the much-anticipated annual Sardine Run. Boats are being launched to search for and net the silver shoals, to bring them to shore and put them in crates to sell. During this process, people could be seen grabbing as many sardines as they could.

According to the editor of The Sardine News, Sean Lange, over 500 crates have been secured so far.

At about 08:00, he said, “A huge net was thrown and retrieved by Tony Moon and his able crew. Get down there now if you want to buy some very fresh sardines,” he said.

Yesterday, June 12, was action-packed, with the first nets being deployed very early, just north of Port Shepstone. “Then Scottburgh saw a few shoals in the surf zone,” added Lange.

Some fishermen have said the nets are relatively small, and they anticipate bigger shoals soon.
