After declining to 7.2 million tons in August, the total cargo tonnage handled at the Port of Richards Bay climbed back last month to reach 8.7 million. This is according to the latest statistics released by Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) this week.

With the country’s ports handling a combined total of 22 million tons of cargo in September, the local port recorded the most tons followed by the ports of Saldanha and Durban. The tonnage handled by Richards Bay last month exceeds the 7 million tons shifted during the same period last year.

Of the total recorded last month, 66 389 tons were break bulk, 188 099 liquid bulk and 8.5 million tons dry bulk.

Richards Bay has the largest dry bulk terminal in the country and along with the Port of Durban, handles over 60% of the country’s seaborne cargo.

With a total of 574 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers moved at the local port last month, 218 TEUs landed on our shores and 356 were shipped. This is a substantial increase compared to the 273 TEUs in August.

Of the 150 vessel arrivals with a gross tonnage of 5 921 415, 20 were tankers transporting oil and chemicals.

Although all commercial sea ports are operational under Alert Level 1 of the lockdown, cruise ships remain prohibited from calling at any of the ports, except for the disembarkation of returning South African crew, citizens or holders of permanent residence permits.

‘Passenger ships are allowed only for the purposes of disembarking returning South African citizens and holders of permanent residence permits, replenishing fuel, stores and provisions, medical evacuation, and search and rescue,’ said Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, earlier this month.
