Port helicopter and dredger back in service

TheTNPA helicopter is back in action after being out of commission for a lengthy maintenance period.

Transferring of marine pilots to and from ships entering and leaving the port is now back to its speedy best after the time-consuming pilot boat transfers were being conducted during the absence of the chopper.

There is also great relief at the arrival of the dredger Ilembe, which was last in operation in October last year.

The dredger is used to replenish sand lost at the northern beaches.

Spoil collected by the dredger is pumped from the T-jetty at Alkantstrand via the pipeline to the beach just north of Alkantstrand.

This is an essential operation to reduce the amount of beach sand lost to tidal surges and coastal storms.

After a long period of inactivity, dredge spoil is at last being pumped onto the beach at Alkantstrand. Beachgoers should be aware of the ‘quicksand’ in the area where the spoil pours onto the beach.
