Two men were earlier this afternoon (Monday) pulled out of the water by bystanders and emergency personnel in what was the first reported drowning of the year.
The incident occurred between 2 and 3pm at Naval Island’s ‘Shaky Rocks’ area.
Bystanders retrieved one of the men, who was not submerged and did not require hospital treatment, from the water, while NSRI Station 19, assisted by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) helicopter, began a search for the second man.
Once located, he was rescued by NSRI duty crew and Ice Medical Services paramedics, who swam out to rescue him.
The man was rushed to Netcare The Bay Hospital in a critical condition but has since passed away.
