Margate beach damaged by storm, Tidy Towns cleans up

Shona Aylward (South Coast Herald) Picture: Tidy Town volunteers already on a mission to get Margate Beach back to normal.

The heavy downfall of rain last night and this morning has left a trail of destruction at Margate beach and beachfront. After all the hard work Tidy Towns Shelly Beach to Margate has done to transform the popular holiday destination, these photos are hard to view.

Lots of work ahead.

However, an upbeat Stephen Herbst said volunteers have already started to mop up and plans are in place to repair the damage.

He said he is determined to win the Dorp van die Jaar competition and this setback will not stop them. “If we win this competition it will uplift so many lives on the coast,” he said.

He said the setback also provides work to volunteers. “We will have this sorted out in no time,” he said.

“The Tidy Town volunteers have already started to collect the pavers that have been washed onto the beach.”
