Margate beach closed due to sewage spill

(South Coast Herald) Picture: People are urged to stay away from the Nkongweni River and lagoon due to the pollution.

Margate Beach is closed for bathing until further notice due to the sewerage pollution of the Nkongweni River and the mouth is open. Ward Councillor Dave Watson said updates will be given as available.

“Authorities are in attendance and reason for the failure of the two pump stations simultaneously is being investigated,” he said.

“A serious issue with the lift and delivery pumps that handle the sewerage from areas of Margate and Manaba. This will mean that the whole river system and the Lagoon is under threat from severe pollution.”

He warned everyone to stay clear of the whole system until the all clear has been given.
