Litter piles up at Blue Lagoon

A large pile of litter in the Blue Lagoon Pond is cause for concern for several Durban North residents who say the litter has been piling up for weeks on the edge of the pond where the iconic Swan Boat sits. While some residents are concerned that refuse is not being picked up, others think that littering is a bigger issue as litter is blown into the lagoon and washed out to sea.

Durban North residents, Anna Accolla and Chantel Molnar, who go walking in the area daily, said they think the issue stems from constant littering in the area which is a popular picnic and braai spot.

“People visited the lagoon on Heritage Day and people also come here often on weekends and don’t pick up their litter,” said Molnar.

“There’s just so much litter, it flows into the sea. Fishermen also litter here. We walk from Durban North right through here. We started noticing the litter in level 4 lockdown when Ramaphosa allowed people to go out and exercise again,” added Accolla.
