Joint effort to beautify beaches pays off

Umdoni Municipality staff and community-spirited mid-South Coasters joined hands for a beach clean-up at the Park Rynie beach campsite recently

“It was great seeing members of the public joining us and helping us better the environment,” said the municipality’s beach manager, Nomfundo Dlamini.

Ms Dlamini said that all beaches under Umdoni’s jurisdiction would be cleaned, with the focus on one beach a month. It was the turn of Scottburgh beach last month, and the municipality was “relatively pleased” with the turnout of volunteers. Encouragingly, more volunteers arrived to help at the Park Rynie beach clean-up.

“We are so grateful for each and every volunteer,” said Ms Dlamini. “Their support is much appreciated and we hope that it continues in the long run.”

The most common items of rubbish collected included cigarette butts, empty bottles and food packaging. Ms Dlamini added that the litter didn’t just pollute the environment, but could also be harmful to children and marine life.

“While cleaning the municipal beaches, we are also raising beach awareness within communities and promoting beach safety.

“People need to learn how to look after their environment and why it’s important to keep spaces like the beach clean.”

“This was a great initiative because we have to all do our bit to help save the environment,” said one enthusiastic volunteer.

Next month, the municipality will focus on Mtwalume beach. The scheduled clean-up dates will be published on the Umdoni Municipality News Facebook page.
