An oil spill occurs when large amounts of oil seeps or pours into the sea. This can be the result of boats and shipping activities, drilling, from land based sources and as a result of accidents, often causing huge environmental impacts to the marine environment, including damage to marine birds.
Oil spill contingency plans are available for Durban Bay and Richards Bay Harbours (see links under Additional Information).
These plans should be referred to for complete disaster team contact details.
DFFE, SAMSA, EDTEA, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the respective Local Municipalities (see District Municipalities/ Metropolitan: King Cetshwayo, iLembe, eThekwini, Ugu) combine efforts to provide a response in the event of any oil pollution at sea.
