National Sea Rescue Institute- NSRI

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is run by 900 unpaid volunteers at 31 bases around the coast (and on 4 inland dams). They are on standby day and night throughout the year. NSRI began in 1967– as a humanitarian service, at no charge to the public and are run on donations, bequests and sponsorships which cover their annual running cost of R52.5m.

South African Maritime Safety Authority- SAMSA

SAMSA conducts Maritime Rescue Co-ordination in an emergency involving imminent danger to a vessel and the people on board.


SAMSA is responsible for Merchant Shipping (National Small Vessel Safety) Regulations 2007, on inland vessels and coastal waters.


In the Eastern Region this includes : Durban, Richards Bay; Port Edward to Ponta do Ouro and adjacent tidal inland areas; and all dams contained in KwaZulu-Natal.
