It was given fluids for rehydration and started on a course of antibiotics.

A JUVENILE African penguin was found recently on the beach in Port Edward by a member of public. It was transported to a local vet who then called uShaka Sea World.

The 1.3kg penguin, named Gucci, seemed strong despite being underweight and dehydrated. Ann Kunz, spokesman for uShaka Sea World, said Gucci was given a full medical check-up by resident uShaka Sea World veterinarian Dr Caryl Knox. It was given fluids for rehydration and started on a course of antibiotics.

“Gucci will receive the best care possible, always with the aim of release in mind,” she said.

If you should find a stranded marine animal on the beach, please call uShaka Sea World on 031 3288222 (o/h) or 031 3288060 (a/h).
