Defining the Coastal Zone

Coastal Zone Definition

According to the ICM Act the coastal zone includes: coastal public property; coastal protection zone; coastal access land; coastal waters; coastal protected areas; special management areas; and coastal management lines.

The ICM Act focuses on regulating human activities within, or that affect the “coastal zone”. Without a clear and consistent understanding of the constituents of the “coastal zone”, management and regulation of human activity is fraught with uncertainty. The Story Map below spatially explores the coastal zone as it is defined in the ICM Act. Use the panel on the left to scroll through the various definitions and explanations.
