Call to action for uMhlanga beach clean-up
Every year, tons of waste items wind up in the oceans and consequently litter our beaches, much of...
Favourable light winds during the week ensured that a swell at sea was moderated, allowing favourable conditions for the anglers who were chomping at the bit to get to the water early on Saturday and Sunday mornings. That all changed when the anticipated south-westerly buster arrived during the mid-morning periods, causing the beach to become uncomfortable with all the sand flying around.
Local anglers have battled a bit to find shad but a few good catches in selected areas, such as Tinley Manor were recorded. Garrick are still plentiful at the popular angling spots with Chaka’s High Rock the most productive.
Copper bream, karranteen, stone bream and the odd stumpie still frequent the rocky areas.
Offshore backline anglers also did well last week finding plenty of snoek in certain areas, with one or two of the fish caught weighing 9 kg.
South Coast anglers were disappointed last week when shad remained scarce all along the southerly angling spots. The ever popular Margate pier that normally produces shad on a regular basis is said to be dead, with nothing being caught. All the other popular shad angling spots were quiet as well but a few garrick were brought in.
The rocky gullies did produce good catches though, with bronze bream and a few black bream on the bite.
Summer is on it’s way and the copper bream seem to be increasing in number with last week’s water temperature being ideal for this species at 20 degrees.
A number of good-sized brusher were also caught down south last week and ghost crab seemed to have been the most popular bait.
Anglers fishing the Durban and Durban North beaches managed a few big shad. Blue Lagoon seems to be the place to be when targeting shad and garrick. A few good-sized kob emerged at Umgeni’s north pier.
The north bank has been producing fish during the dark and some big grunter and stumpies have been recorded in the area as well.
A little north at Virginia and Glenashley a a few big shad have been landed along with one or two brusher plus the odd garrick and stumpie.
News of a nice diamond and a couple of blue rays added to the excitement.
Apparently garrick are still shoaling just off the end of the north pier in the Durban harbour area and the guys fishing there continue to do well with grunter.
