eThekwini encourages residents to use recycling centres

eThekwini Municipality has said it regards recycling as an important part of the country’s informal economy and offers development opportunities for communities. In a statement, it said recycling does not only benefit the individual, but also helps to protect the environment. The city has buy-back and drop-off centres where residents are encouraged to drop off their recyclable waste.

“Buy-back centres is a facility where individual waste collectors and street waste pickers can sell their recyclable waste. While drop-off centres are collection facilities where residents are given access to drop-off recyclable waste. These centres provide residents with the opportunity to discard their recyclable waste themselves and not to wait for the scheduled collection day,” it said.

Recyclable materials accepted at both buy-back and drop-off centres include newspapers, magazines, cereal cartons, cardboard, plastics, plastic bottles, glass, and tetra-pack material.

“These centres are a huge part of recycling as they play an important role in diverting waste from landfill sites, creating jobs, promoting the re-use of materials, and minimising the possibilities of environmental degradation and illegal dumps,” it said.

Waste pickers and residents can sell their recyclables to:
Isipingo Buy-back Centre at 1029 Old Main Road, Isipingo.
Recyclable waste can be dropped off at the Nyati Road Garden Site – 1 Nyati Road, Athlone Park.
