Food, Fun and Adventure: Swim or snorkel at Umzumbe...
Swimmers and water sport enthusiasts can take their pick from the many lovely South Coast...
Standing in solidarity with subsistence and small-scale fishermen within coastal communities, the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) along with activists from the Kwa-Zulu Natal coastline, picketed against oil and gas exploration in the ocean at various beaches recently.
Some of the beaches included Cuttings Beach, Amanzimtoti Main Beach, and Umgababa Beach, among others.
Janeira Reddy, SDCEA’s oil, gas, livelihoods project officer, said, “Many corporations, such as Shell, Sasol, ENI, and Total Energies, are flocking to our South African coastline to explore for oil and gas.
“However, the impact due to this is immense and affects not only the marine life, but fisherfolk who rely on the ocean for their livelihoods, as well surfers, swimmers, traditional healers, and all ocean lovers and users.
“The pickets were held at to say no to oil and gas exploration, no to fossil fuels, no to fish kill and yes to clean healthy oceans,” she said.
