With the country being moved to Lockdown Level 1 amidst the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, most of the eThekwini Municipality’s facilities have been opened to the public. Unfortunately, due to problems with the supply of chemicals and reduced staff, swimming pools have remained off-limits. Until now.

With the start of the festive season the city has announced that public pools in the municipality would be reopened before the start of the December school holiday.

According to eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela,  the City is in the process of ensuring that the facilities comply with the Covid-19 regulations. This he said was to ensure the safety of both the public and municipal employees.

“The Aquatic Safety-Pools has since acquired the necessary Covid-19 PPE for employees, however, to have such equipment in a pool facility and be able to use it, two lifesavers are required to be present per shift (currently we cannot comply) as legislated by the Disaster Management Act. We are currently in the process of engaging temporary staff to enable us to comply with legislation,” said Mayisela.
