Documenting seismic surveys’ effect on marine life

“The documentary explores the link between seismic surveys and marine strandings “

ALL conservation-minded people are invited to attend the screening of a short environmental documentary exploring the pressing issue of offshore oil and gas development off the South African coastline and it’s consequence to marine life.

Becoming Visible focuses on a seismic survey off South Africa’s east coast, which was extended into the whale migration season in July 2016.

There were a number of unusual deepwater mammal strandings during and after this survey, including a whale stranding in Richards Bay.

Directed and produced by Janet Solomon, the film advances the theme of nature as a political asset and questions the scripts of consumptive economics embedded in South Africa’s governmental approaches to environmental policy.

It also investigates the risks posed by traumatising noise exposure from marine seismic surveys to many marine species and the vulnerability of fishery-based livelihoods to these impacts.

The free public screening is being held at 7pm next Thursday, 15 March at the KZNSA Gallery, 166 Bulwer Road, Durban.

After the screening, a question-and-answer session will be held with Solomon and Dr Jennifer Olbers.
