Three men have been arrested and their trucks confiscated for illegally loading construction sand at the Tongaat River mouth. Tongaat police spokesperson, captain Patrick Ngwane, said police received a tip-off about the activity and investigated.
“Three males aged between 28 and 40 were allegedly involved.
Upon arrival at the site, police noticed an excavator and different trucks being loaded with sand destined for various locations around Crocodile Creek,” Ngwane said. The men appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court last Monday. Ngwane said the accused had no authorisation to load sand and their activities caused soil degradation and damage to the environment.
Saps Tongaat station commander, colonel Santha Moodley, urged the public to work together with the police to ensure law-breakers were arrested. She said illegal sand mining must be reported to the Mineral Resource and Energy department (DMRE), which is responsible for monitoring sand mining activity and enforcing compliance. To report any crime, call Tongaat Saps on 032-944 9900 or crime stop 08600 10111.
