Clean Surf ready to tackle Umbogintwini Beach

Clean Surf Project (CSP) is set to host a beach clean-up at Umbogintwini Beach on Saturday, 20 February. The event will take place from 9 am to 11 am and parking is available at Amanzimtoti Country Club, situated at 1 Golf Course Road, Athlone Park.

“With the easing of lockdown regulations from the beginning of February, CSP encourages the community and local businesses to join or support upcoming clean-up campaigns. Plastic pollution along the coastline has been an ongoing concern due to recent rainfalls that lead to litter being washed out to sea,” said the organisation’s Romy Wenzel.

All you have to bring along to the clean-up is a pair of gloves, water, sunscreen and shoes. Bin bags will be provided.

“To date, three clean-ups have been conducted at Umbogintwini Beach this year which resulted in 24 bulk bags (one ton bags) being filled with plastic waste only. Sorting is rather time-consuming, especially with limited resources available.  Nevertheless, the positive side of things, all waste has been collected by SW Collectors to recycle the material accordingly. Thumbs up to Giselle’s Kitchen and Co. for joining the recycling programme by encouraging customers to dispose of recyclable waste into designated bins and containers, not forgetting to mention the kind sponsorship of light snacks and refreshments for the clean-up crew.”

Residents are urged to comply with Covid-19 regulations by wearing their masks and ensuring social distancing during the clean-up.
