MOSS Road and Umhlatuzana canal weirs, situated on the Bluff that run through Clairwood respectively, are the latest issues the Bluff Ratepayers’ Association (BRA) is tackling. The eyesore areas visited most recently by the chairperson, Ivor Aylward, are polluted and reportedly have an unbearable smell.
“It is actually unbelievable what is seen there. There is a massive sewage problem in the weir that most probably came down from Richardson Road, that has had a sewage problem for close to four weeks. This is a total health hazard. It comes into the weir and goes through to the golf course canal, which is now blocked, but the state of the water is clearly visible,” he said, cautioning golfers on illness implications.
“This is a careless attitude from our representatives. This has nothing to do with the dumping by residents, this is plain carelessness of not sorting out a problem when we ask for it to be. We need answers to this in an absolute hurry,” Aylward added. He also critiqued the structure and capacity of the Umhlatuzana canal actual weir wall, that, according to him, is incorrectly built to handle such pressure.
“It is an absolute disaster state. The substances behind the wall are slowly flipping over onto the bay and into the harbour with the stench of diesel mixed in oil is a disgrace. This is killing everything that is living downstream and in the harbour. If we do not stand together and fight this for our children’s sake, one day when are not here anymore, there will be nothing left. It will not be long,” he said.
Ward 66 councillor, JP Prinsloo, said there have been several sewer issues along Tara Road during the last few weeks that resulted in the main pipeline along the road and through the golf course being blocked.
“It took the city a few weeks to resolve the issue due to lockdown restrictions. They only had a limited amount of contractors available to repair and address the issue. It has been resolved and I have not seen any further issues nor has it been raised again since a few weeks ago.”
