Avian influenza has been confirmed in seabirds within the Trafalgar Marine Reserve and Mpenjati Estuary.
Also known as bird flu, avian influenza is a highly contagious viral disease that affects domestic and wild birds.
If you come across a dead or sick seabird on the beach be aware of the following:
* Don’t touch or handle the bird without gloves and mask.
* Photograph the bird for identification.
* Description/pin of the location the bird was found.
* Date and time of the day the bird was found.
* Send these details via Whatsapp to 083 9416243.
* If the bird is dead dig a deep hole in the sand and (without direct contact) bury the bird on the spot.
If you are unable to do this contact the Mpenjati Conservancy team and they will assist. Send a pin and location to 067 7694414.
