Beach revellers remain a headache in Salt Rock and Tinley Manor in spite of increased policing

While Ballito is benefitting from increased weekend policing, drunken revellers are still spoiling holiday beachgoing at Tinley Manor and Salt Rock. Ratepayers’ outrage at poor behaviour last year and last month at Ballito beaches resulted in better policing by community safety officers, but excessive drinking returned further north last weekend as warm temperatures drew people to the water.

Salt Rock and Tinley Manor picnic areas were strewn with empty beer bottles, plastic and rubbish on Monday morning.  Tinley Manor resident Brandon Pentolfe said partying had been out of control with lawlessness, damage to property, drunken behaviour and intimidation of residents.

“For the past 3 months we have been dealing with the same issues and it has become bad. Taxis bring large numbers of people with coolers filled with alcohol. We saw a woman being assaulted at the car park recently but when we called the Umhlali Saps we were told they were not able to send any of their vehicles as they had already left to deal with a situation in Ballito.”

Over the past 2 weekends, there was a marked improvement at Ballito’s beaches and car parks. Salt Rock ward councillor Privi Makhan said it was encouraging to see KDM community safety ensuring visible policing and bylaw enforcement. However the number of discarded beer bottles were an indication that more still needed to be done.

Ward 6 community safety officer Jack Abrahams said the Saps and KDM presence was not consistent enough.

“Members of the public call KDM control room, are given a reference number but not much else is done about it. Lifeguards are also reporting the drinking in public.”

To report by-laws being broken call the KDM control room at 032 946 2711 or 060 714 3764.
