John Irven, chairman of the Community Safety Organisation is shocked by damage done to the dune along Beachfront Road.
Another dune has been decimated along Beachfront Road in Sea Park.
Last year, the excavation of a nearby sand dune sparked outrage and was described by many as a ‘disaster’.
This time a building contractor has ‘mined’ a dune to use the sand in alterations to a house, situated opposite the dune.
John Irven, chairman of the Community Safety Organisation, said it didn’t matter why one needed to use the salty sand, it was illegal to mine sand in the Admiralty Reserve.
Eye witnesses say not only has the contractor dug massive holes into the dune, destroying the natural vegetation, but has also been chopping away at the natural coastal bush, including the protected milkwoods, for several months.
Paddy Norman of Bendigo Conservation Group said he had reported this to the municipality and to the Department of Environmental Affairs.
“This is another case where people will hopefully realise damage to the environment is damage to all of us,” he said.
Mr Norman added that perhaps home owners should keep an eye on their contractors.
Last month, the Herald reported that Oslo Beach residents were furious about the clearing of prime coastal land alongside Marine Drive.
