ALERT: All beaches closed to swimmers

Allan Troskie (NORTH COAST COURIER)

At present it is not known when the beaches will be open to swimmers again.

A wage dispute between the KZN Sharks Board and its employees has led to the closure of all of KZN’s swimming beaches.

This is after Sharks Board employees removed the nets protecting bathing beaches all along the coast, according to KwaDukuza Lifeguard supervisor Bongani Xulu.

“Lifeguards will still be on duty but their tasks will be primarily to make sure people are not entering the water.”

Xulu said at present they did not know how long the strike would last.

“If you visit the beach, look for the red and yellow flags – if there are only red flags, it means the beach is closed to swimmers.”

He stressed that it was not the lifeguards’ job to fight with beachgoers, saying if people chose to enter the water it would be at their own risk.

“However we strongly urge people to listen to the lifeguards. If you enter the water you are setting an example for others, who might then follow you in.”
