After a week of inactivity, the rehabilitation of Alkantstrand began in earnest on Monday. Tonnes of filler sand was being dumped on the land side behind the geobags, where a large gully had been scoured by powerful waves during two recent spring tide storm surges.

According to Jonathan Thrabaran of Aqua Transport and Plant Hire, the company doing the rehab work, the sand is being obtained from the Richards Bay Ski-boat Club, where it has been building up for some time at the launch site.
“This has been causing problems for boats and skippers using the slipway because of lack of depth, so by removing the sand and transporting it to the beach for filler material, two problems are being solved at once.
