It was a joyful day for the parents and learners of Zuzumqhele High School in Ezimbokodweni as they received bucket-water filtration kits which will ensure clean and safe water daily for their families. The donation was made possible by African Explosives and Chemical Industries (AECI) sponsorship. AECI’s community liaison officer Nomali Msomi said access to clean and safe water for families in Ezimbokodweni is a daily challenge as water-supply problems cause it to run dry for days or even weeks, leaving families stranded and desperate.
“The eThekwini Municipality trucks deliver water at inconsistent intervals, and they are often hijacked or drivers bribed to deliver to storage tanks of those who can afford it. Families are then forced to scramble for available water sources, including natural springs, rivers and burst water pipes,” said Nomali.
“The water delivered by the water tankers,” said Nomali, sometimes has sediment and looks unclean.
AECI has, in the meantime, provided several water taps located outside its factory premises for the community to access water from.
In light of this, AECI partnered with Village Water Filters SA to provide each of the learners’ families with a bucket-water filter. The filters clean water to make it safe by removing all the dirt particles and 99. 999% of all harmful germs and pathogens, including cholera, typhoid, E. coli, Salmonella, and others.
The parents, teachers, learners and school governing body members were trained on how to use and maintain the bucket filters.
