Bathers, beach-goers and fishermen in Richards Bay are urged to stay away from the beach in the vicinity of the caravan park after a whale washed up yesterday (Monday). The humpback calf, measuring about 7 m in length, suffered fatal injuries before stranding, and all conservation authorities have been alerted.
The cause of death has not yet been determined, but marine biologists are studying photographic evidence of the mammal’s remains.
There is a possibility of the high tide taking the carcass back into the surf so, for their own safety, bathers and all other beach-goers must not enter the sea.
The stranding is gathering attention and City of uMhlathuze lifeguards are monitoring the scene.
