Alongside Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife staff, the team at SAAMBR (South African Association for Marine Biological Research) released a rescued Subantarctic Fur Seal back into the wild on World Youth Day.
The seal was found with a superficial pelvis injury in Zinkwazi last Sunday. He was then taken in to uShaka Sea World. The dedicated team at the non-profit organisation chose to call him Excalibur.
“Once Excalibur was stabilised and his wound was treated, he was administered antibiotics and left to rest while being closely monitored,” said SAAMBR spokesperson, Ann Kunz.
The animal health team felt confident he was strong enough for release yesterday as he appeared to have regained his strength.
“Before doing so, we consulted with marine mammal scientist and seal rehabilitation expert, Greg Hofmeyer. Greg agreed that it was the right decision to release Excalibur,” said Kunz.
“We are very grateful to everyone who assisted in looking after Excalibur while he was on the beach (especially the fisherman who watched him overnight) as well as everyone who assisted in transporting him to uShaka Sea World,” added Kunz.
