Mayor to launch Durban climate action plan

Ethekwini Municipality Mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda is inviting the community to the official launch of the Durban Climate Action Plan on 3 September. The aim of the plan, which is in accordance with the Paris Agreement to reduce global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius, builds on the 2015 Durban Climate Change Strategy to transition the City towards carbon neutrality and climate resilience by 2050.

South Africa’s climate change legislation, as seen in the proposed Climate Change Bill, will introduce a requirement for Mayors and MECs to develop their own Climate Change Action Plans (CAP) of which implementation will be monitored and reported to National Government on an annual basis.

It is against this background that the Durban Climate Action Plan, the first in Africa and one of only 12 worldwide, is seen as a significant milestone in local level climate change action.

Among stakeholders to join Mayor Kaunda in this momentous event are local and international climate partners, local and national government leadership. The official online launch is from noon to 2pm.
